When to use it

When to use it, and when not to

This assessment is one step in a larger programme. Using it for work that belongs to a neighbouring template produces records that are hard to report on later.

Use it for

  • The event or activity this assessment covers has occurred, or is about to
  • The workspace is being set up, or the register needs an entry added or retired
  • You are running the Warehouse and Dock Safety programme and this is one of its steps
  • A linked record needs this one to exist: links yard inspection, traffic plan

Not for

  • Racking Inspection, which checks pallet racking for damage, overload and missing components against the damage classification in use.
  • Racking Damage Report, which reports damage found on racking at any time, not only during inspection.
  • Loading Dock Safety Check, which checks dock levellers, edge protection, lighting, restraints and pedestrian separation before and during loading.
  • Anything outside KnowSafe, which belongs in the workspace that owns that process

How many pedestrian and vehicle segregation assessment records should we have?+

This is a singleton. One record per workspace, set up once and maintained, rather than one per event. Other templates refer back to it.

Which programme does the pedestrian and vehicle segregation assessment belong to?+

It is part of Warehouse and Dock Safety. Racking damage classified and acted on, trailers restrained, and pedestrians separated rather than warned.

How is a pedestrian and vehicle segregation assessment scored?+

Can the pedestrian and vehicle segregation assessment template be changed?+

Inspection

Racking Inspection

Checks pallet racking for damage, overload and missing components against the damage classification in use. Run weekly by the area owner and yearly by a competent person. Damaged uprights are the most common cause of rack collapse, and collapse rarely stops at one bay.

Record

Racking Damage Report

Reports damage found on racking at any time, not only during inspection. Raised by whoever finds it, immediately. Completed in under a minute with a photograph. Damage classified as red takes the bay out of use before anything else happens.

Checklist

Loading Dock Safety Check

Checks dock levellers, edge protection, lighting, restraints and pedestrian separation before and during loading. Run at shift start. Completed by the dock supervisor. The dock is where vehicles, pedestrians and forklifts meet at the same edge.

Record

Trailer Restraint and Chock Record

Records that a trailer is restrained and its keys controlled before anyone enters it. Completed at every load and unload. Signed by the loader and the driver. Vehicles pulling away with a forklift inside remain a leading cause of dock fatalities.

Inspection

Mezzanine and Edge Protection Check

Checks handrails, toe boards, pallet gates and floor openings on raised storage areas. Run monthly. Completed by the area owner. Pallet gates propped open for convenience are the usual finding and the usual cause of a fall.

Checklist

Pallet and Load Condition Check

Checks pallets and made up loads for damage, overhang, stability and wrap quality before they are stored or shipped. Run at the point of build. Completed by the operator. An unstable load is dangerous in the rack, in the trailer and at the customer.
