What is an environmental aspect?
An element of an activity, product or service that interacts with the environment: a discharge, emission, waste stream or resource use. The environmental impact is the change that interaction causes, harmful or beneficial. The register records both together, because rating one without the other produces a list of activities rather than consequences.
What is an environmental aspects register?
The master list, required by ISO 14001 clause 6.1.2, of every way a site's activities interact with the environment, rated for significance under normal, abnormal and emergency conditions. It is the document every other environmental instrument is meant to be built from.
What makes an aspect significant?
Whatever criteria the organisation defines and applies consistently: typically some combination of scale, severity, likelihood, legal exposure and stakeholder concern, evaluated with existing controls in place. Significance is a management decision informed by a method, not an inherent property of the aspect.
Scope
When is an environmental aspects register required?
This register is the foundation the rest of the Environmental Management programme is built on. Using it to record a single inspection or a permit's conditions produces a document neither it nor the neighbouring template can use.
Use this template when
- The register is being built for the first time as part of implementing or certifying an ISO 14001 system
- A new activity, process, substance, site or piece of equipment is being introduced
- The scheduled annual review is due
- A process, layout, substance, volume or activity has changed materially since the last entry
- Objectives and targets are about to be set, or reviewed, and need the current significant aspects to work from
Do not use it for
- Environmental Site Inspection, a periodic physical walk of the site covering waste, storage, drains, emissions and housekeeping, not a determination of significance
- Chemical Storage Environmental Check, which checks how chemicals are stored against containment, drainage proximity and labelling
- Stormwater Outfall Inspection, which checks discharge points for sheen, colour, odour and debris on a recurring basis
- Environmental Permit Register, which lists permits, licences and consents held, with conditions and expiry dates
- Waste Stream Register, which tracks individual waste streams in more detail than a general aspects entry carries

Environmental Aspects Register requirements by country
The duty to identify and evaluate aspects sits inside ISO 14001, a voluntary standard, so its reach depends on whether certification or contractual pressure has made it effectively mandatory for the site.
ISO 14001:2015 (voluntary); no federal aspects-register mandate
Federal environmental law is medium-specific (air, water, waste) rather than aspects-based, but certification is frequently a customer or contract requirement.
The register is a certification and supply-chain instrument here more than a regulatory one, and its absence is a commercial gap before it is a legal one.
ISO 14001:2015; Environmental Permitting Regulations for permitted activities
No standalone statutory duty to hold a register, but permitted sites are expected to understand and control the environmental interactions the permit covers.
For a permitted site, the register and the permit conditions should be read together; a missed aspect is an obligation the permit work has no way to anticipate.

The core requirement: aspects determined, significance criteria defined and applied, results maintained as documented information.
Auditors test the method and its consistency, not the raw list, which is why an undocumented significance criterion is a recurring finding regardless of country.
How to complete it
How to complete an environmental aspects register, step by step
The template will accept a register listing only routine, normal-condition activities and still look complete. What decides defensibility is whether it engages with the conditions a routine pass skips.
Start-up, shutdown, maintenance and foreseeable emergency belong in the register alongside normal running; they are where most real environmental incidents originate because nobody rated them.
Fix the criteria, scale, severity, likelihood, legal exposure, before rating starts and apply them identically. A register where the same activity scores differently depending on who assessed it has no defensible threshold.
Clause 6.2 expects objectives to come from significant aspects, so a 'Significant: Yes' entry with no linked objective is the loop left open, not a smaller version of compliance.
Contractor activity, transport and purchased goods and services sit outside direct site control but not outside the clause's reach. Dropping them because the site cannot manage them directly is the first thing an experienced auditor checks for.

Most common environmental aspects register findings
The register nearly always exists by audit time. The findings concern what it was allowed to leave out, and whether significance actually did anything afterwards.

Case in point
Case in point: the register that was right for the site it used to be
A manufacturing site built its aspects register at ISO 14001 certification, rating solvent use, waste generation and energy for normal production. It was reviewed each year and signed off without exception three years running. What it never covered was the tank-cleaning maintenance run twice a year by a different team from the one that had built the register.
During one cleaning operation a solvent line was disconnected incorrectly and a quantity discharged to a drain feeding stormwater, not the foul sewer the process was designed around. The investigation found the activity had never been assessed as an aspect: abnormal, infrequent, outside the group that owned the register. The corrective action was not a longer register; it was widening who is asked what happens on site before the next review.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions about environmental aspects register
Does every aspect need to be rated as significant or not?+
Yes. Every determined aspect needs a significance outcome under the organisation's criteria, even where the answer is clearly no. An aspect left unrated is functionally the same as one that was never identified.
Should abnormal and emergency conditions get their own register entries?+
Yes, as separate lines against the activity they belong to. Assuming the abnormal case is covered by the normal-condition score is the most common way a register understates real exposure.
Are contractor and transport impacts really in scope?+
Under most interpretations of clause 6.1.2, yes, as indirect aspects. The site does not control them directly, but it can influence them, and a register that only counts what it directly controls has drawn its boundary narrower than the clause intends.
What should happen when an aspect is rated significant?+
It should produce a linked objective, a documented operational control, or both, and that link should be visible in the register. A significance rating with no downstream action is a rating that changed nothing.
How is significance actually calculated?+
However the organisation defines it, provided the method is documented and applied consistently. Typical inputs are scale, severity, likelihood, legal exposure and stakeholder concern, but the formula matters less than whether two assessors reach the same answer.
What triggers a review outside the annual date?+
Any change to what is being assessed: a new activity, substance, machine, site or volume change, plus anything an incident reveals the register missed.
