General Work Permit

Covers non routine work that does not fall under a specific permit but still needs control and authorisation. Raised before work starts. Issued by the area owner. Used sparingly, because most work should sit under a named permit type.

When to use it

When to use it, and when not to

This permit is one step in a larger programme. Using it for work that belongs to a neighbouring template produces records that are hard to report on later.

Use it for

  • The event or activity this permit covers has occurred, or is about to
  • Authorisation is needed before the work can begin
  • A new record is needed; each one gets its own ID in the form PTW-2026-000
  • You are running the Permit to Work programme and this is one of its steps
  • A linked record needs this one to exist: links vendor, site

Not for

  • Hot Work Permit, which controls welding, cutting, grinding and any work that makes sparks or heat.
  • Confined Space Entry Permit, which controls entry into tanks, pits, silos and other confined spaces.
  • Energy Isolation Permit, which controls work where machinery must be shut down and locked out.
  • Anything outside KnowSafe, which belongs in the workspace that owns that process
