A short, mandatory course covering what ammonia smells like, what its alarm sounds like and how that differs from the fire alarm, which way to move, why nobody ever approaches a release, and where the muster point and escape breathing apparatus are. Built against ISO 45001 cl.7.2, across the Emergency Preparedness, Pressure Systems and Refrigeration, and Statutory Safety Training programmes.
Why is it a singleton?
One record represents the site's awareness programme rather than one event. Attendance repeats inside it as people join or refresh, but the record itself is set up once and maintained, and other templates such as the ammonia review and emergency plan refer back to it.
Who has to complete it?
Everyone on site, including contractors, not only engineering or refrigeration staff. Ammonia does not respect job title, and a release in a machinery room or corridor can reach anyone nearby.
Scope
When is an ammonia awareness training required?
This training delivers and tests individual awareness of an ammonia release. It does not decide ammonia system safety, examine the plant, or replace the deeper engineering competence a refrigeration technician needs.

Ammonia Awareness Training requirements by country
No jurisdiction regulates ammonia awareness on its own. Duty flows through general process safety and health and safety law, with ISO 45001 the common thread regardless of location.

Ammonia above threshold brings the site under PSM, requiring operator training on hazards and emergency procedures; below threshold, the general duty clause still applies.
PSM records are examined closely after any release, and a generic session that ignores the covered process invites a citation.
Control of Major Accident Hazards Regulations 2015 (threshold-dependent); HSWA 1974 ss.2-3
COMAH sites ensure employees understand the major accident hazards and emergency arrangements; smaller users rely on the general duty and their own plan.
An inspection expects training to name the site's detection points and muster arrangements, not a generic ammonia sheet.
ISO 45001 cl.7.2 and cl.7.3
Management system requirement that competence be determined, delivered and evaluated, with workers aware of the consequences of departing from arrangements.
Certification auditors look for a tested knowledge check and a defined refresher trigger, not a signed induction sheet.

This item exists because the fatal error on an ammonia site is walking towards the smell rather than away from it. A Partly here is a distinct finding and should stop the record closing regardless of the other two items.

A session delivered in a language a contractor does not follow is attendance, not awareness, and extending this course to everyone collapses if the content did not land.
A twenty-minute course refreshed annually leaves eleven months where the memory is untested. A change to the muster point, detection points or the ammonia system should raise the review independently of the stated date.

Case in point: the contractor who followed the smell instead of the exit
A dairy processor delivered ammonia awareness to a maintenance contractor on their first morning, alongside the standard induction pack. The session was delivered in English, the contractor's second language, at a pace matched to permanent staff already familiar with the site. Content Covered and the knowledge check were marked Yes and Correct throughout, Delivered In Understood Language was recorded as Partly, and the record closed Complete because the overall result still cleared the pass mark.
Three weeks later a minor ammonia leak developed near the machinery room the contractor was working close to. Rather than moving away, he walked towards the smell to investigate, consistent with training content he had not retained closely enough. A colleague pulled him back before exposure became serious. The fix was not repeating the same session; it was refusing to let Delivered In Understood Language close as anything short of Yes.
