What is manual handling screening?
A rapid filter applied to many handling tasks to identify which warrant full assessment, using a small number of questions about weight, frequency, posture, reach and conditions rather than a quantified calculation.
How does it differ from assessment?
A screen sorts tasks into those needing attention and those that do not, and produces no number. An assessment applies a validated method to a specific task and produces a figure that supports a control decision. Using a screen where an assessment is needed produces a colour where a number was required.

Keep it short, screen the worst case, and make sure the referral goes somewhere.
A screen that takes twenty minutes is an assessment with a different name, and it will be applied to a fraction of the tasks it was meant to cover. Five to eight questions covering weight, frequency, reach, height, posture, distance, coupling and environment is enough to sort tasks, which is all it has to do.
The heaviest item, the deepest reach, the lowest or highest position, the fastest period. The screen decides whether anyone examines the task more closely, so applying it to the average variant systematically clears tasks whose extremes are the problem.
They know which product variants are awkward, which shifts are worse, and which conditions make a routine task difficult. A screen completed by walking past with a clipboard captures the task as it appears; a screen completed with the operator captures the task as it is.
A screening programme producing a hundred referrals into a queue with capacity for a few per month has moved the backlog rather than reduced it, and it has created a documented list of known problems nobody is addressing. Screening capacity and assessment capacity have to be planned together.

Worked case
Case in point: cleared, then reported
A site screened three hundred handling tasks over two months and referred twenty-two for full assessment. The programme was reported as complete, with the remaining tasks recorded as screened and acceptable.
Over the following year, discomfort reports arrived from four tasks that had been screened and cleared. In each case the screen had been applied to the standard product variant, and the difficulty came from a heavier seasonal variant, a promotional pack, or a period when line speed increased.
The screening had been performed competently against what it was shown. What it was shown was the task on an ordinary Tuesday, which is not the task that generates the reports.

Frequently asked questions
Why should screening over-refer?+
Because the two errors are not equivalent. A task wrongly referred is assessed and cleared, costing an assessment. A task wrongly cleared is not looked at again until someone is injured on it, and the record then shows it was considered and passed, which is a worse position than never having screened it.
What should a screen contain?+
Five to eight questions covering weight, frequency, reach, working height, posture, carry distance, grip quality and environment. Enough to sort tasks and no more. A screen taking twenty minutes is an assessment under another name and will be applied to a fraction of the tasks it was designed to cover.
Which variant should be screened?+
The worst one that actually occurs. The heaviest product, the deepest reach, the lowest position, the fastest period. The screen is deciding whether anyone examines the task more closely, so screening the standard variant systematically clears tasks whose extreme versions are the ones producing injuries.
Does screening satisfy the assessment duty?+

What if a cleared task generates a discomfort report?+
Treat it as a finding about the screen as well as about the task. The same blind spot will apply to everything screened the same way, so the useful response is to identify what the screen missed and rescreen the affected population, rather than assessing that single task and closing it.
